In a nation marked by its vibrant democracy and diverse talents, individuals who embody dedication, innovation, and a commitment to public service stands out.
Muhammad Sani Abdullahi, affectionately known as Dattijo, is one such individual whose journey from international development expert to a public servant in Nigeria's government has been nothing short of remarkable.
Recently nominated as one of the Deputies to the Governor of Nigeria's Central Bank by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Dattijo's potential to contribute to national development is both promising and inspiring. Dattijo's career trajectory has been characterized by a selfless commitment to improving the lives of Nigerians. His academic background is a testament to his commitment to gaining the knowledge and skills necessary to effect meaningful change. He obtained his master's degree in Development Economics and Policy from the University of Manchester and a second master's degree from Ahmadu Bello University, where he studied International Affairs and Diplomacy. These qualifications laid the foundation for his future contributions to international development and diplomacy.
Furthermore, Dattijo's pursuit of excellence didn't stop at formal education. He actively sought opportunities to enhance his understanding of critical subjects that would later prove invaluable in his public service career. He earned certificates in Public Finance at the prestigious London School of Economics, delved into Sustainable Development at Columbia University, and mastered the intricacies of Advanced Project Management at Oxford University. These achievements highlight his commitment to continuous learning and his dedication to being a well-rounded leader.
Dattijo's passion for leadership and global affairs was further evident when he was selected to be part of the 2017 cohort of Georgetown University's Leadership Seminar. This experience broadened his horizons, allowing him to interact with a diverse group of leaders from around the world and share ideas that would eventually benefit his homeland.
His tenure as a policy adviser at the office of the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon in New York was the culmination of his academic and professional journey. In this esteemed role, he played a pivotal part in forming the core team that developed the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are now guiding nations, including Nigeria, in their pursuit of sustainable development. However, Dattijo's dedication to his homeland led him to make a pivotal decision—to leave his prestigious UN appointment and return to Nigeria to serve as the Chief of Staff to the Governor of Kaduna state and later Commissioner for Budget and Planning in Kaduna State Government. This decision showcased his unwavering commitment to being a catalyst for positive change at the grassroots level. In this role, he contributed significantly to the development of Kaduna State, working tirelessly to ensure that public resources were allocated efficiently to benefit the people.
Even though Dattijo resigned from his role as Commissioner to contest for Gubernatorial and later senatorial seat representing the Kaduna Central Senatorial Zone in the 2023 general elections, his commitment to public service remained undiminished. While he may not have clinched victory in the electoral contest, his dedication to the welfare of his constituents and his unwavering belief in the potential of Nigerian democracy were evident throughout the campaign. Dattijo's latest endeavor, the publication of his book titled "Disruption: Rethinking Governance to Work for the Poor," further underscores his commitment to addressing the challenges facing Nigeria's governance structure. In a time where innovative solutions and fresh perspectives are desperately needed, Dattijo's book offers a roadmap for reimagining governance to be more inclusive and responsive to the needs of the most vulnerable in our society.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's nomination of Dattijo as one of the Deputies to the Governor of Nigeria's Central Bank is a commendable choice. It recognizes Dattijo's wealth of experience, his dedication to service, and his potential to make a significant impact on Nigeria's economic landscape. As we confront the complex economic challenges facing our nation, having individuals like Dattijo in key positions is crucial for driving positive change.
